Girl In The Woods

So this is the finished outline of the picture I mentioned in my last post, colouring this is turning out to be a bit of a pain cos I cant decide how I wanna do it, I will have it finished fairly soon though... I hope.

The image itself is based on a random folk tale I came across on the internet, I was struggling to find inspiration so I decided to use old folks tales and fables as inspiration, anyway the one that I based this on was actually pretty naff, I just like the idea that it gave me, which I'll explain a bit more once I've completely finished it.

Oh yeah and the folks tale is called something like the long lived ancestors if anybody wants to have a read.

Internet Life Drawing

I decided a while back that I needed to do some studies of figures again, also I thought I'd challenge myself and see if I could create a picture based around a nude-ish female. This is something I havent really experimented with before, I thought it would be a good practice and help me to broaden my abilities.

These are just a few life studies I did from a website that works a bit like a life drawing class, which is pretty useful seeing as its kinda difficult to find decent classes down here. However I have recently been informed of potential life drawing sessions, so expect to see a few more real life figure drawings in the future!

Making money... box

Back in summer I spent a day at a ceramic shop, while I was there I painted these ornaments, the shark is a money box and the lobster is just a decoration, I think.

This was pretty fun to do, I've never tried to transfer my work onto something 3D before so it was definitely a challenge. I might have a go at this again sometime, be nice to make my own model and not just use a template too, so you never know you might see some more of these one day!

Eastlake Unlocked!

It's finally out there!

A while ago I posted a sneak peek at a commission I was working on, well here it is! It's a little zine/booklet designed to promote and guide people at the Plymouth city museum exhibition about sir Charles Eastlake, I was commissioned by a group of students called the young explainers to produce the cover illustrations. I'm very happy with how it turned out and most people seem to think it looks like him so I'd say it does it job!

This was a nice brief for me because it gave me the ability to push my skills of portraiture, this is one of my weaker abilities so any chance I get to improve it is great. I also really enjoyed working in a Victorian influenced style, it's something I will definitely be revisiting!

Oh and if anyone is around in Plymouth I would check the museum out, it's pretty good, and this zine free so go grab one!

Climbing Mountains

Its been a while since I've posted anything on here, so this is what I've been doing with myself for most of the time. This was a commission for a primary school, they wanted me to produce posters to visualise the progression the school kids made in each subject. So I decided to use mountains cos I thought that its a little bit more engaging and interesting compared with the usual target board or medals that were used before. The idea is that the kids each have a flag, which they colour themselves and put their name on, and this flag moves up the mountain along the footsteps to reach each flag-post, which represents each level of progression, the little climbers are just there to make it look better and help the pupils to visual it better.

This brief was quite enjoyable, it was nice to do something a bit more light hearted after the revelation stuff, it was also nice to have complete control over what I produced. Overall the school was very happy with the final artwork, which means I must be doing something right!  Oh yeah and I now know how to make an invoice, things are starting to feel very professional!

A Look At Things To Come

Here are 2 Images to give you an idea of what I've been working on lately, these segments are from a commission I've been working on for the museum in Plymouth, I dont want to give too much away just yet because I want the work to be seen in its final state, so enjoy these until its out in the real world!

I'm also working on a few other things at the moment so stay tuned!

Another Mural

Its been a little while since I posted anything, things have been pretty busy for me lately and I'll be able to show you what I've been upto fairly soonish. anyway here are a few pictures of the mural I've recently finished, this one was a solo project so it was pretty challenging getting it done on time, I managed it though and here is the outcome. I'm quite pleased with how it came out and the school who I painted for seemed pretty happy with it so I count this as a success!

Plympton Library Mural Done!

Ages ago I posted a rough sketch idea for a mural I was doing with a few other illustrators, well its finally been finished! its fair to say that this wasn't the most straight forward of briefs because of a few planning issues, however it was still a very enjoyable project to work on, painting at this scale is always pretty fun.

The mural was based around children's literature and each of us designed characters based on a book of our choice, I chose to do Long John Silver from Treasure Island by Robert Louis Stevenson.

I'll be going back to Plympton Library to get some more detailed photos of the finished mural in a few weeks, so for now enjoy the mural.

The Revelation is Done

Conquest is done! All four Revelation illustrations are done! I'm pretty pleased with how they have turned out, apart from a few differences I've got them exactly how I wanted them to look. As for Conquest, this one didn't take me half as long as the other three, which is good because I need to get them printed out pretty sharpish, anyway here is conquest and here is all four of the Illustrations side by side, gives you an idea of how I want them to be displayed.

War Finished

Here is the finished version of War, pretty happy with how this one has come out, I tried to keep the colours a bit more vibrant compared to the other two, I still think that it fits quite well with the rest of the images.

hopefully I'll get the final one finished soon and get them all up together.

Conquest outline done!

Here it is, the final image of my revelation series, such a relief to have all the outlines finished, now I've just gotta add colour to this one and War, I'm hoping it wont take me too long. also drawing this amount of buildings is tiring, glad I wont be doing anymore for a while.

Anyway, enjoy this for now, the finished ones will be up pretty soon.

I'm up on Covered!

Got my work up on the covered blog! check it out here

Theres some really good redesigns people have done on this blog, well worth a look

War's Coming

I've finally finished the outline for print No. 3, this one is War. Creating this image was a little trickier than I expected it to be, mostly because of placement and scale issues, the fact that the living creature for this one is a cow didn't help either, its not exactly easy trying to make a cow with six wings and covered in eyes fit into an image about conflict and death, I think I did alright though.

I'll be trying to get the outline done for conquest before I colour this one, simply because I'm running out of time, after that I'll hopefully get them both coloured up and finished, until then, enjoy War.

Famine Finished

So here is the finished version of famine, bit more colour in this one, I think I managed to keep it bleak enough.

the other two should be coming along very quickly, cos I'm starting to run out of time, so watch this space for the other 2

also my website is up and running now, check it out here

Famine colourless

Heres the outline work for my next image, this one is famine. I did this a few weeks ago but i havent had much chance to do anything to it lately thanks to things like dissertation writing, which has pretty much taken up all my time. I will be coming back to these in about 2 weeks though so hopefully I'll be able to get them sorted pretty smoothly, I'm also working on the Library mural that I posted about ages ago! once that is finished it'll be up on here too.

but for now enjoy this outline.

First one done!

I've finally finished the first print for my Revelation series, this one is of death, the fourth horseman. I've added a lot more detail since my last post about it and also played around with a few of the colours. Just so it didn't look too flat and boring I decided to add a paper texture over the top of the image, as well as giving the image a border, I thought that pulling bits out so they overlapped the border also made it look more interesting, it also meant I wasn't losing parts of hades when i cropped it.

Now I know how I'm doing these prints the others shouldn't take as long, I've already began to draw up the rough for famine so expect that one soon.

Bit of Colour In Death

I've added some colour to my Death image for the four horsemen series, I've also started adding some highlights to the image. This is a little different to what I've done before, kind of wanted to challenge myself and see if I can make my images look more detailed when using colour in photoshop.

its nearly finished so I'll put the final version up when its done,

Also im on facebook now, would appreciate a like or two, Alex Art

Death Looking Rough

The rough visual for one of my four horsemen pieces, this is the image depicting death.

Its taken me so long to develop the horses, I didn't realise they were such a pain in the arse to draw! Anyway I'm pretty pleased with how its looking at the moment, I'm gonna add a few bits to the empty spaces, to make them look less empty and possibly put a building on the right hand side to fill up that space.

hopefully I'll have this finished, or at least another one roughed up by next week. watch this space.
